Understanding the IVF and Ultrasound Schedule for Successful Results
As one of the more popular fertility treatments we perform at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine, PC, in vitro fertilization (IVF) has given many of our Omaha, NE patients the opportunity to start a family when other methods have been unsuccessful. When meeting with our specialists, we will ensure that you are educated on the steps involved to help provide a smooth procedure. With the advancements made in fertility treatment, we now use a variety of tests and technologies to improve your success rate. This includes using ultrasound technology. So what does the IVF ultrasound schedule look like?
Initial Ultrasound
To begin your treatment, one of the doctors will perform a baseline transvaginal ultrasound. This diagnostic exam will determine if you have any preexisting issues, such as uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, or endometriosis inhibiting your body’s ability to conceive naturally. The doctor will also be able to determine if your ovaries are producing eggs. Before the IVF procedure can proceed, preliminary treatments may be necessary to help address any issues affecting your fertility.
Follicle Development
After you have been given the appropriate hormone inducing medications to stimulate your ovaries, the doctor will perform another ultrasound to determine if your body is responding well to treatment. Proper follicle development will ensure successful egg retrieval. During this stage, ultrasound appointment will be scheduled every two days.
Egg Retrieval
Egg retrieval is a delicate process that requires precision and a trained specialist to ensure none of the eggs are harmed. Once your eggs are ready to be harvested, we will use ultrasound technology to guide the needle to your ovaries in order to successfully retrieve the eggs. This step of the process is performed under anesthesia to ensure your comfort, as well as to help the body remain still.
Embryo Transfer
Once the eggs are retrieved, they will be combined with the sperm in our lab to begin the fertilization process. Throughout this period, we will carefully monitor the embryos to determine which ones should be transferred. Depending on your unique situation, we typically transfer the embryo three or five days after the eggs have been retrieved. We will use ultrasound technology to ensure the embryos are properly transferred into the uterine cavity.
Determining Your Pregnancy
After the embryos have been transferred, the waiting process begins. During this two-week period, we are waiting for the embryos to implant within the lining of your uterus. Patients are generally encouraged to take a blood pregnancy test nine to 11 days after the transfer is completed. If pregnancy is confirmed, the doctor will perform another transvaginal ultrasound a week or two later to locate the fetus. Additional ultrasounds will be performed throughout your entire pregnancy to monitor the fetus’ growth and development.
