Planning for the Costs of IUI By HCRM on August 15, 2015

Happy, attractive coupleThere is a wide range of factors that can cause a couple to have difficulties conceiving a child. Fortunately, for just about every cause of infertility, there are also fertility treatments that can help patients navigate obstacles in order to successfully achieve pregnancy. In the case of IUI, or intrauterine insemination, many fertility problems can be avoided, which gives couples facing a variety of infertility causes (low sperm count, endometriosis, cervical problems, etc.) the chance to conceive naturally. While IUI can be a great success, it is understandable that patients need to plan ahead for its costs. We discuss IUI costs with our Omaha patients so that they can budget the expense of treatment and go into the procedure free of stress or worries.

What Is IUI?

IUI, or intrauterine insemination, is a procedure more commonly referred to as artificial insemination. However, this treatment has improved quite a bit in recent years. During this procedure, a concentrated sample of washed sperm is inserted (via catheter) directly into the fallopian tubes. In the past, sperm were injected into the vaginal canal, meaning that they still had to travel before reaching the eggs for fertilization. By placing the sperm so close to the fallopian tubes and eggs, the chances of a natural conception are increased.

What Are the Costs of IUI?

IUI is an assisted reproductive technology that requires minimal doctor intervention. It is also one of the most affordable fertility treatments available. The costs of IUI will vary by clinic and by patient, so it is best to schedule a consultation in order to accurately determine the cost of treatment. However, the average IUI treatment ranges between $300 and $800. This price typically includes the cost of sperm processing as well as the actual insemination procedure. However, there are many additional aspects that may be included in IUI treatment. These include the following:

  • Ultrasound
  • Blood monitoring of follicle development
  • Fertility drug treatment

All of these elective procedures may increase the chances of successful IUI treatment, but they also will increase the final cost of treatment. To give patients a cost estimate that is specific to their unique needs, it is important to schedule a personal consultation in which all aspects of treatment can be discussed.

Benefits of IUI

IUI treatment offers patients many benefits. The first of which is the chance to conceive naturally and avoid the need for more invasive fertility treatments. It is because of the non-invasive nature of this treatment, as well as the low cost when compared to other fertility treatments (a typical IVF procedure can cost between $10,000 and $12,000) that IUI is typically one of the first fertility treatment options to be considered.
