Helping Women Achieve Pregnancy Through IUI By HCRM on February 16, 2015

Pregnant woman holding her bellyInfertility is a problem that is common for couples who are trying to conceive. However, the cause of infertility varies for each patient, which is why, at the Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine, PC, we offer a wide range of fertility treatments that allow us to meet the unique needs of each of our patients. One treatment that has proven successful for a large number of our patients is intrauterine insemination, a reproductive treatment in which processed sperm is placed directly in the cervix to improve the chances of a successful pregnancy for patients who are dealing with certain infertility issues. This process, commonly known as artificial insemination, is one of the easiest assisted reproductive techniques and has allowed a great number of our patients to experience the joys of pregnancy and parenthood. We are happy to discuss with our Omaha patients IUI success rates and whether this procedure may be right for them.

How Successful Is IUI?

When looking at the success rates of IUI, or artificial insemination, there are many factors that need to be considered. The success of IUI may be affected by the age of the patient, the patient’s diagnosis (or source of infertility), and whether or not IUI is combined with fertility treatment to stimulate the ovaries. With all of these factors considered, the success rate of IUI falls between 5 and 20 percent. At the Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine, we do use fertility medication to stimulate the ovaries and ensure multiple egg development, which increases the chance of a successful IUI treatment. Prior to IUI treatment, the sperm that is used for insemination is processed to remove all seminal fluid and cellular debris. By working with concentrated sperm and injecting the sperm high in the uterus we can increase the success rate of IUI treatment so that our patients are closer to the 20 percent success rate. While 20 percent may not sound like a particularly high number, it is important to understand that among women who face no fertility problems, the natural rate of pregnancy for women in their 30s is 20 to 25 percent per cycle. This number continues to decrease as a woman ages. When considering this fact, under the best circumstances, IUI can help women get close to the natural pregnancy rate of fertile females.

Candidates for IUI

The success of IUI also depends on what type of infertility issues couples have. We will only recommend artificial insemination to patients that may be responsive to this type of fertility treatment. Patients who may be ideal candidates for IUI treatment include those with the following fertility issues:

  • Endometriosis
  • Cervical infertility
  • Anovulatory infertility
  • Mild male-factor infertility
  • Immunological abnormalities

Our fertility specialists will be happy to discuss this process in further detail with those patients who we feel may benefit from IUI treatment.
