Are you trying to determine which type of fertility treatment you should undergo? Intrauterine insemination (IUI) – also known as artificial insemination – is a common method with excellent success rates. Fortunately, this treatment is provided by our experienced doctors at the Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine in Omaha, NE. Today, we will take a look at some of the IUI benefits, and help you determine whether this option is right for you.

A Brief Recap of IUI

Before we explore some of the benefits of IUI, it is important to review the basics of the procedure. Typically, fertility drugs are administered to encourage egg production and stimulate ovulation. Once the eggs have matured, the sperm will be provided by a male partner or donor. The sperm sample will be washed and concentrated, so that only motile, healthy sperm remain. Finally, the sperm will be delivered to the uterus using a small syringe.

IUI is Less Invasive

For patients experiencing mild infertility issues, we often recommend IUI. Compared to in vitro fertilization (IVF), it is a less invasive procedure. In fact, there is no downtime following the in-office procedure, and most patients can immediately resume their normal daily activities.

IUI Can Address Multiple Conditions

IUI is used for a variety of fertility issues. If the male partner has a low sperm count or low motility rate, IUI can address this problem by only including healthy sperm. If the female has abnormalities within the reproductive system, such as endometriosis, IUI can be a useful solution. Some women have a condition known as unreceptive cervical mucus, which impedes the sperm from traveling through the cervix and into the uterus. IUI can eliminate this step and deliver the sperm directly to the uterus.

IUI is More Cost-Effective

When compared to IVF, IUI is typically more affordable, and many patients choose it for this reason. Additionally, certain insurance plans that do not offer full fertility coverage may cover IUI. Therefore, the patient often incurs less out-of-pocket expenses.

When is IUI Recommended?

When it comes to fertility treatments, there are several options available. IUI may be an excellent option for you if:

When is IUI Not Recommended?

While IUI is incredibly effective for many patients, it is not the cure for all fertility issues. To be eligible for IUI, the woman’s fallopian tubes must be completely open. Ovulation must also occur naturally or with the assistance of fertility drugs. Additionally, if male factor infertility is significant or complex, IUI may not be the right choice for your situation.
